What is Foam Concrete?
Foam concrete is a mixture of cement, fine sand, water and special foam. Upon hardening, it becomes strong, lightweight, highly fluid concrete known as Cellular Lightweight Concrete. Foam concrete contains millions of even-sized air bubbles or cells uniformly distributed through the fluid material.
Foam concrete uses the same ingredients as conventional concrete. However, it uses coarse aggregates while conventional concrete does not. As with normal concrete, the strength development continues as long as it is exposed to the air. The foam aeration agent in foam concrete absorbs humidity from the atmosphere allowing the hydration process of the cement to progress.
Properties of Foam Concrete
Foam concrete is a lightweight, fluid, low-density material comprising up to 80% air. It is often used to Common applications are to fill voids and provide support for top layers. The amount of foam added to the basic cement, cement-sand, or cement-fly ash mixture determines the density of foam concrete. It can resist both fire and water, and possesses high sound and thermal insulation properties. As it is air-entrained and free-flowing, foam concrete is ideal for filling voids and undercuts, ensuring the trench is completely supported once set.
Why Choose Namratech’s Foam Concrete Services?
Predominantly used in trench reinstatement and as an alternative to type 1 stone backfill, we provide foam concrete for a range of purposes using traceable WRAP compliant recycled aggregates. It is an ideal backfill material for utility trench reinstatement and complies with the Highway Authorities & Utilities Committee legislation (HAUC).

Applications of Foam Concrete
It was about 60 years ago that Cellular Lightweight Concrete (CLC), known as foam concrete, was developed. Since then, it has been used all over the world for construction and rail applications. CLC finds vast applications in the building industry, such as apartments, houses, schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings.
Foam concrete is also widely used in the protection of pipelines and decommissioning septic tanks, disused fuel tanks and cellars.
Rail applications such as bridge strengthening, pumping foam concrete in culvert to prevent collapse, creating pedestrian walkways, infilling for platform extensions, infilling spandrel arches.
Highway applications such as strengthening abutments by infilling to take the weight off the side of the railway bridge, grouting redundant pipelines, infilling underpass to strengthen the structure, infilling of sink holes, etc. Other applications include construction of subways, swimming pools, gas pipes, road stabilisation, and floors.
Advantages Of Foam Concrete Solutions
The placement of foam concrete is relatively easy, which considerably reduces labour costs. Since it is a low density material, the excavation of foam concrete is simple and inexpensive. Due its self-leveling nature, foam concrete doesn’t require compaction, avoiding any potential damage to the services. The process also doesn’t need on-site storage of fill material. Here are some of the several benefits of using foam concrete:
Eliminates Foundation Treatments
Our concrete foam is produced at a lower weight compared to native soils or compacted base material. Hence, there is no need for expensive foundation treatments.
Avoid Compacting
No mechanical compaction required. This implies that it doesn’t have any impact on existing structures or deep foundations.
Cost-effective Production
Production is less costly as it doesn’t require a large number of raw materials or huge quantities of aggregate to be excavated and transported. Moreover, the fill material can be easily recycled and reused.
Self-levelling/Low Density/Lightweight
Foam, being self-levelling, can fill gaps and pockets in the most hard-to-reach locations in the soil. Also, another plus is that it improves the load-bearing qualities of deficient soil.
Recyclable
It is possible to create foam concrete with increased strengths and higher densities as per the requirements of each project – simply by adding fine or coarse aggregate, fly ash, and other mixtures or foaming agents.
Other advantages of foam concrete include these:
- Rapid Installation
- Settlement Free Construction
- Reduced Sound Transmission
- Ease of Removal
- Good Thermal Insulation quality
- Provides Shock & Energy Absorption
- Good compressive strength
- Fire resistant
